Southern Skincare

I live in the very heart of Dixie in Birmingham, Alabama. It. Gets. Hot. The extreme heat combined with high humidity levels tends to wreak havoc on my skin. It took me almost 20 years to develop a true skincare routine consisting of the same products, every day, twice a day. It’s a lot harder than it sounds. One of my best friends (and veterinary medicine student!) and I always talk about how we are compelled to buy new products often with the hope that “this is the one.. the product that will change my life.” Of course, none of them ever are and it’s on to the next one. Finally though, I have entered the world of having my sh!t together and developed a routine.

After intense research and multiple consultations, I decided to purchase a Dermalogica skincare set. I was a little nervous about the price, nothing like the drugstore brands I typically buy, but I was determined to find products that worked. I’m so glad that I did. Purchasing the set actually helped me adhere to the routine because I had spent precious dollars and didn’t want it to go to waste. Also, you really do get what you pay for and when it comes to beauty, always remember that. What I like about Dermalogica is that it’s formutated with no artificial fragrances or colors, which my skin is extremely sensitive to. With that being said, here’s my all-Dermalogica morning and night routine.

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel – I like this cleanser because it’s soap-free which sounds counterintuitive but soap is actually too harsh for the face and can strip it of its natural oils and protective layers. The lavender is kind and gentle to skin as it purifies and calms and Balm Mint cools and refreshes (a must have in this southern weather). I typically spring for the 16.9 oz bottle. It’s $54 but will last FOREVER. It takes a very small amount to wash your entire face. My partner and I share one and it lasts almost half the year.

Dermalogica Ultracalming Mist – In any urban area (like Birmingham) your skin fights a constant battle against pollutants and toxins in the air. I use this mist at least twice a day, sometimes more, to freshen my skin, protect against environmental assaults, cool off, and also prep for moisturizer. The oat extracts helps reduce irritation and keep your complexion looking fresh! It’s also a great deal, $36.

Dermalogica PureLight spf50 – Ask any woman over 40 what she wishes she had done differently in terms of her skincare and she will always, always say “wear sunscreen.” Go ahead, ask your mom. I finally took this advice to heart and chose a daily sunscreen that packs a mean punch. Not only will this protect your youth from the sun, it also regulates melanin production for a more even skin tone and includes Hyaluronic Acid, enemy of fine lines and wrinkles. This is the priciest part of my morning routine at $64 for 1.7 ounces but, in the long run, it’s worth it.

Dermalogica Total Eye Care with spf15 – Sunscreen is critical for the most delicate skin on the face, around your eyes. This is also where people begin to show signs of aging first (yes, as early as 30!) This one acts as a sunscreen and reduces puffiness but best of all, utilizes optical light diffusers to minimize the appearance of dark circles (which, as a PA student, is a MUST HAVE). $50.00 but a little goes a very long way.

Dermalogica Precleanse Oil – This is the first step in a “double cleanse regimen,” which I have adopted for my nightly routine. This product is amazing for quickly removing makeup (especially mascara) and allowing the grime of the day to just wipe cleanly off your face. If you remember your general chemistry, like dissolves like. It takes oil to remove oil. It also feels very luxurious on the skin. Reasonably priced at $40, you will fall in love with this product.
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel – We already talked about this one but I do use it twice daily. It’s a great follow up to the precleanse (the second step in the “double clenase”) to make sure you’ve removed every particle of acne-causing dirt and makeup before nodding off.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
I couldn’t wait to get to this one because it is one of my ALL time favorite beauty products. The story of how I came to love this product is a funny one, I found it in the shower of an Air B&B that my partner and I stayed in during our time in Dublin, Ireland. We both used it and were both raving about the results. Our skin felt so incredibly soft and smooth, definitely not over-scrubbed or raw as many exfoliators tend to leave me. This includes salicylic acid as well which is a must-have for my extremely break out prone skin. This scrub keeps my skin bright and very, very clear. $55 and worth every penny, I’d probably pay $155 for it. I’m serious.

Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream – This nightly moisturizer is the perfect consistency, not too heavy but still noticeably hydrating. Aloe gel nourishes and calms any irritation from the day while cucumber and arnica soothe and “de-puff.” It’s also chock full of antioxidants like vitamin C & E. Word to the wise: get all the antioxidants you can anywhere you can. $43.00 for a bottle that will last a very long time, it only takes about a fingertip’s worth for me to cover my face.

Dermalogica Intensive Eye Repair – I really love deeply intense hydration for the eyes while I sleep. Intensive Eye Repair is very rich and includes many of my favorite antioxidant vitamins and nutrients. I slather this on my peepers right before I close them and wake up looking bright eyed and refreshed. $56.00 but again, a little goes a long way.

I’ve had great skin success using this regimen. I have been maintaining this routine since Christmas of 2015 and my skin has never looked better. I am also a big fan of regular face masks. I have not yet broken into Dermalogica’s masking options because, as a former LUSH Cosmetics employee, I am completely addicted to their fresh face masks. Speaking of LUSH, check out my other cosmetic obsessions!
